Stay safe around water this summer

In the great tradition of a warm summer in Australia, locals and tourists are already enjoying spending time at the many beaches, pools, and rivers across eastern Victoria.

Tragically drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death, with over 280 drowning fatalities recorded annually in Australia, according to the Royal Lifesaving Society.

The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath said there is always an element of unpredictability with any water-based activity, so it is important to be mindful of any potential risks.

“Being ‘water safe’ through awareness, education and preparation is key to enjoying the outdoors lifestyle, whether swimming, boating or land based fishing,” said Ms Bath.

“To protect the safety of yourself, your family, and your friends, I encourage everyone to be vigilant around water and always look out for others.

“It pays to be aware of your surroundings, swim to the conditions and your abilities, and stay up to date with weather reports, the VicEmergency app, reading location warning signs, understanding currents and accessing the daily local surf reports.”

Ms Bath said water play is great fun on a hot day, splashing around in the pool in the backyard, or diving through waves at the beach is an activity many of us enjoy.

“We have all earned a bit of fun at this time of year, but it is always important to participate sensibly and be aware of the hazards.

“For those with young children, constant supervision around the water is critical, simple steps such as wearing a life jacket when out on a boat or swimming between the flags where lifeguards patrol actively reduce risk.

“Summer is the time to make special memories with family and friends – together let’s make sure they are happy ones, by respecting our waterways and beaches.”
